SECURITY OFFICER REFRESHER with FREE First Aid 7th-9th July '25

Renewing your licence is important. It’s what keeps you working in the industry you love and with the people you love to work with.

The new ‘refresher’ is a simple 2 day course (3 with First Aid) that brings better skills to everyone.

It has been developed to lift standards so that all security personnel can deliver the best service to their clients, carry out guarding duties efficiently, communicate correctly with colleagues, search belongings & vehicles in a safe and professional manner and always have the capacity to act in an emergency.

With this qualification, you’ll be able to work in many areas of guarding properties, preventing crime and securing sites closed to the public. You can build a career up to head guard, work on specialised sites or properties or work in facilities management.

SO’s are now expected to be aware of the terrorist threat level, plan routes of escape, manage worker safety, know what to do in an emergency situation, as well as - dealing with customers & site visitors, using search skills to ensure safe entrance of vehicles onto their property, recognise signs of conflict or burglaries, administering first aid while awaiting medics or the emergency services and delivering the best customer service for your client so that their visitors return.

Principles of Working as a Security Officer in the Private Security Industry

This includes assessments on conflict management & searching techniques.

The new framework focuses on minimising risk to personal safety, identifying threats, dealing with clients, customers & terror threats, being familiar with search procedures, communicating efficiently, giving safe access to authorised individuals & vehicles, understanding legal issues within the industry and safe & professional behaviour.

You will refresh your knowledge on laws which affect the private security industry and your role, key purposes & community benefits of the job, risks, responsibility & hazards of working in the industry, fire & emergency procedures, customer service, record keeping, post incident management & keeping vulnerable people safe.

You’ll be observed practicing skills in radio communication, responding in an emergency situation, de-escalation techniques, safe & professional searching of belongings & vehicles, handling & confiscation of dangerous items and much more!

First Aid Training

From 1 April 2021 (and 1 October 2021 for top up) learners taking their Door Supervision or Security Officer training, including ‘Refresher’ training, will need to show that they hold a current and valid First Aid or Emergency First Aid certificate that meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

The first day of this full course will be First Aid training.

It is an SIA requirement that each learner is sufficiently qualified in First Aid or Emergency First Aid which includes the catastrophic bleed element.

If learners already hold a level 3 first aid certificate(including catastrophic bleed), these should be presented their First Aid or Emergency First Aid certificate to their training provider before they start training.

This certificate must be valid for at least 12 months from the course start date.

The certificate must be a level 3 emergency first aid at work & include the catastrophic bleed element as minimum.

The qualification must be OfQual regulated.

*On and after 1st April 2025 QNUK will only accept the Emergency First Aid at Work (Security) qualification or Pre-hospital qualifications to meet the recommendations of the Manchester Arena inquiry, Volume 2: Emergency Response, recommendations R140 and R141.

English language, written, speaking & listening is essential.

Security operatives are likely, in the course of their work, to be required to make calls to the emergency services or, for example, communicate to resolve conflict. It is therefore essential that security operatives can communicate effectively.

This qualification has been developed by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) in collaboration with all endorsed Awarding Organisations and various expert working groups. Learners who are successful in achieving this qualification will become eligible to apply for an SIA licence to practice within the private security industry in the United Kingdom, supporting a role in the workplace. This qualification is for learners who do-not hold a Door Supervisor licence or if their licence has lapsed more than 3 years ago.

This is an SIA licence linked qualification, meaning that successful learners will be notified to the SIA which provides a necessary requirement towards obtaining a licence to perform the role of a Door Supervisor in the private security industry.

Please Note: This qualification is available in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The legal systems of Scotland and Northern Ireland differ from that of England and Wales. Differences in the legal systems are reflected in the delivery of relevant sections of the qualifications. Employers, however, may not know which version of the qualification an employee may have taken, so the SIA advises that operatives and their employers remain responsible for being familiar with the laws and legal system relating to the area in which they will be working.

Renewals

Learners must currently hold an active SIA Security Officer licence which is due for renewal or has previously held a licence and has lapsed by no longer than 3 years. Outside of 3 years will require to retake the full Level 2 Security Officer qualification prior to applying for a new licence.

If you completed your first door supervisor qualification before 1st Oct 2021 and have not completed the required top-up training, you will no longer be permitted to ‘top up’. You will now be required to complete the full, new Security Officer qualification.

Only those aged 18 or over may hold an SIA licence, therefore this qualification is restricted to those aged 18 or over. You MUST be aged 18 or over on the first day on this course.

Full attendance to ALL sessions is MANDATORY. You will NOT be able to pass if you do-not attend for any reason.

Proof of identity is required on attendance. Please see our SIA Document Check List for advice on what to bring. If you do-not bring ID as listed, then you will NOT be able to start the course.

*PLEASE NOTE: There are no reimbursements for non-attendance. There are no refunds for any placements on courses. Places can be transferred over to a future course in certain circumstances & must be discussed with the centre manager.
